It is the 5th century BC and ancient Greece has fallen under the threatening eye of Xerxes and his powerful Persian Empire, an assembled force built for conquest like the world had never seen. As this giant army rolls over neighbouring countries it suddenly finds itself facing the combined forces of the Greeks following the command of King Leonidas and his Spartan armies thousands of city states now rise up to battle the Persian invaders and drive them back to where they came from.

Sparta: War of Empires is a strategy based city management MMO that is completely free to play where each player is put to tasks on building up their own city state as an Archon, managing their resources, building up a powerful army and expanding their borders to push out the Persian forces and taking the battle directly to them. Whilst many Archon follow similar goals and some may even be prepared to work together, there are those that loot to profit in times of war and take advantage of the chaos that has consumed the land and fight their fellow Greeks to claim their territory as their own.

The main mechanic of the game is resource management, acquiring, using and keep a watchful eye on the three main resources required to run your Empire: Grain, Timber and Bronze. These combined resources are needed to open Agreements with neighbouring cities to learn the secrets and technologies, used to construct buildings of learning, military training outposts and city defences as well as rising up a trained and armed force. Players can acquire resources from a variety of means, whether constructing resource production buildings, trading rival cities, completing quests or exchanging them with other players through trade and diplomacy; a wise Archon will learn how to use both the sword and the olive branch to get ahead in the game.

A superior army isn’t enough to take on Xerxes and his Persian forces and will require cooperation from fellow Archon to band together if they hope to stand against this common enemy. At level 30 players are able to create their own Coalition, and organised structured hierarchy that other players can join and work cooperatively with each other. Fight together against rival Coalitions, rise in fame and notoriety as you claim the spoils of war for yourselves, create Agreements with each other to trade technologies and exchange resources and even military reinforcements in times of need.

Sparta: War of Empires is a free to play MMO but has access to a premium currency within the game that players can spend to purchase premium features such as increasing the upgrade and construction rate of units and buildings, buying necessary resources, Agreement Articles for learning new technologies and even units. This currency can be purchased with real money but is also acquired over time in game through performing different tasks such as logging into the game for five consecutive days, levelling up, being in the top 10 ranks every week and completing a variety of achievements.
